Human Resource Generalist Search # 1112-0034
Ohio Wesleyan University is currently searching for a Human Resource Generalist to work in a collaborative and active HR office serving the faculty, staff and students at one of the nation’s premier small liberal arts institutions.
The HR Generalist is responsible for assisting the CHRO and the Associate Director in daily maintenance of the Ohio Wesleyan University benefit plans and in keeping the HRIS system updated. The HR Generalist will also assist with a variety of administrative duties necessary to the efficient functioning of a busy, customer service oriented HR department.
Major Responsibilities
- Assist in the day to day aspects of the University’s benefit programs including; health, dental, vision, and life insurance, disability, retirement, workers’ compensation, unemployment compensation, tuition, and flexible spending. This includes answering OWU employee questions, updating the HRIS system, assisting employees in finding benefit related information.
- Help new employees with new hire paperwork and enrollment in benefits.
- Set-up new employees in the on-line benefit enrollment system and send new employees log-in and password information.
- Process employee terminations and conduct exit interviews as needed / required.
- Answer the main HR number, check the office HR e-mail box and open and distribute office mail on a daily basis.
- Prepare and submit timely report required by law to be filed with federal and state agencies, and coordinate and prepare various reports related to benefits programs for internal purposes.
- Work with OWU retirees and retiree benefit plans.
- Participate in benefit surveys, and conduct other benchmarking research to ensure benefit programs are current with regard to trends, practices, and costs.
- Ensure compliance with various federal and state laws.
- Coordinate requests for employee data for any university department, organization or office that requests such information.
- Assist in the maintenance of the filing system for the HR office, to include all university personnel files and other paper and electronic files.
- Work with the CHRO in developing, designing, updating and maintaining the HR website, the ADP compensation and benefits portal, and other paper and electronic HR communication tools.
- Work with the HR department calendars and schedules.
- Assist the Associate Director of HR with the audit of insurance bills and other types of research / account reconciliation.
- Create reports and develop ways to automate forms and processes within the HR office.
- Assist with the recruiting process including the tracking of applications, resumes, and job posting.
- Conduct special projects, as assigned by the CHRO or Associate Director.
- Collaborate with and support the work of the HR staff.
- Attend University events, meetings and training as needed / required.
- Participate in professional development opportunities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications for the position include:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field with one to three years of human resources experience required or equivalent combination of education and experience. PHR preferred.
- Experience with ADP Payroll, Time & Attendance, and HR & Benefits software strongly preferred.
- Ability to research, evaluate and analyze data and report.
- Ability to create and design reports preferred.
- Intermediate skill level with Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Strong analytical ability.
- Good general knowledge of principles and practices of human resources management.
- Good general knowledge of employment law including COBRA, FMLA. HIPAA, FLSA and other benefit related laws.
- Experience managing and working with benefit plans and programs.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills, attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team.
- Excellent presentation, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of and competence with basic accounting skills for basic budgeting, auditing of bills, and reviewing of reports.
- Able to multi-task and prioritize projects.
- Able to work alone on a broad variety of projects.
- Able to exercise effective judgment, sensitivity, creativity to changing needs and situations.
- Able to establish and maintain healthy working relationships with people in course of work.
- Superior customer service and follow-through skills.
