Overview

Ohio Wesleyan University (www.owu.edu) is a selective, private, undergraduate liberal arts, residential institution founded in 1842 and is located just 20 miles north of Columbus. Located on a beautiful 60 acre campus in downtown Delaware, Ohio, Ohio Wesleyan employs about 500 full time employees, of whom 135 are faculty and has a student population of around 1800. The Bursar’s Office is located on the ground floor of the beautiful and historic University Hall and consists of a staff of 3 employees. The Bursar’s Office is responsible for all aspects of Student Accounts, including Cashiering, and supports various functions within the Accounting Office, including Perkins and University Loan processing, Account Reconciliations, General Ledger Maintenance and Year-End Audit Preparation.

Job Description

The Bursar reports to the Associate Vice President & Controller and is responsible for the overall administration of all aspects of students’ tuition accounts at Ohio Wesleyan University. This includes the billing of tuition, fees, room, board and all additional charges which are regularly posted to a student’s account and also those charged on an exception basis. The Bursar is responsible for processing monthly tuition bills and the collection of all accounts. The Bursar oversees all cashiering functions on campus, which include not only payments on student accounts, but all employee collections processed through the cashier window, as well as payments from outside customers. The Bursar plays an active role in contracting with and managing the relationships with various collection agencies used by the University. The Bursar is also responsible for various account reconciliations on a monthly basis and plays an important role in year-end closing processes and audit preparation.

Specific Job Responsibilities

  • Full responsibility for all aspects of student tuition accounts, including providing high quality customer service through actively responding to questions from students and their parents regarding charges and payments; a large percentage of this job is spent responding to questions regarding tuition bills, both through walk-in traffic and phone calls;
  • Full responsibility for the billing of all charges posted to student tuition accounts and coordinating with the various offices that generate those charges, including the Registrar’s Office, the Financial Aid Office, the Residential Life Office, the OWU Card Office, the Public Safety Office and many others;
  • Serve as an active back-up to the Senior Accountant who has full responsibility for working with students on their Perkins Loan awards, collecting signed promissory notes and submitting all Perkins Loan details to our third party administrator, who handles billing and collection of these loans. Management of four to five outside Collection Agencies for Perkins Loan and Student Account collections;
  • Preparation of a monthly account analysis of various balance sheet and income statement accounts, as assigned;
  • Assist in the analysis, reconciliation and preparation of various schedules for month-end, year-end closes and annual audit preparation
  • Other projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelors degree in accounting, finance or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Strong customer service skills;
  • Strong technology skills, which are adaptable to the technology used for Student Tuition Accounts at Ohio Wesleyan (PowerCAMPUS and Dynamics GP);
  • Intermediate level knowledge of accounting functions and related internal controls, including accounts receivable;
  • General knowledge of not-for-profit accounting and willingness/ability to research and resolve accounting issues, as they relate to processing of transactions within student accounts;
  • Excellent written, verbal, communication, and interpersonal skills with a customer service focus;
  • Microsoft Excel experience a must;
  • Detail oriented and organized in work;
  • Ability to meet assigned deadlines;
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, management, and external agencies to maximize performance, creativity, problem solving, and results;
  • Proactive and independent;
  • Flexible and enthusiastic team player.

Preferred

  • Prior experience with Student Accounts, a Bursar Office or in a customer service industry is a plus;
  • Word and other Microsoft Office applications is preferred;
  • Former PowerCAMPUS or Dynamics/Great Plains experience a plus.
