Assistant Professor, Music (Piano / Music Theory)

Ohio Wesleyan University invites applicants for an Assistant Professor, full-time, tenure track appointment in Piano/Music Theory to begin in August of 2012.

Responsibilities: a full teaching load consists of six units per year.

  1. Teach applied piano lessons, with emphasis on recruiting and retaining an excellent piano studio.
  2. Teach the second year of a two year written music theory course (2 units); additional courses may include Aural Skills I-IV (sight-singing, aural dictation; 2 units).
  3. Oversee or teach such courses a Keyboard Techniques, Accompanying, Class Piano instruction, and Piano Proficiency exams.
  4. Oversee maintenance of departmental pianos.
  5. Assist with departmental accompanying responsibilities and student advising.
  6. Maintain an active performance profile.

Qualifications: (1) D.M.A. or Ph.D. in relevant area, ABD considered but must have the degree by time of appointment, (2) transcripts from undergraduate and graduate institutions (photocopies allowed during initial search process, originals required at time of interview), (3) evidence of significant classroom and studio teaching experience, (4) the successful candidate will demonstrate a record of successful recruiting or present a viable plan, (5) evidence of performance activity and ability.

Assistant Professor rank and seven year probationary period required for tenure non-negotiable. Salary determined by university salary scale as well as the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Completed application packets will include:

1) letter of interest (cover letter), 2) resume or Curriculum Vitae, 3) three professional references with at least one reference addressing teaching experience, 4) undergraduate and graduate transcripts (copies acceptable, originals required at time of interview), 5) Electronic sound files performed by the applicant with three selections, one each from eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth century repertoire. One of these selections must be a collaborative work (either instrumental or vocal).
