Associate Director and Head of Public Services

We invite applications for: Associate Director and Head of Public Services – This is a continuing, full-time, 12-month position.

The Associate Director and Head of Public Services serves as the manager for all library public service operations in the Libraries and Information Services Department at Ohio Wesleyan University. The person we seek must be an innovative, creative, collegial, and energetic leader with a strong commitment to customer service, collection development, information literacy, digital initiatives, and emerging technologies in libraries.

Responsibilities: Ensures the overall effectiveness of 3 libraries: Beeghly Library (main branch) and the science and music libraries. Oversees the information commons and café; reference/instruction; circulation; interlibrary loan; government documents; special collections; Methodist archives; audio-visual; digital initiatives; and the liaison librarian model. Will have direct management responsibility for public services staff, including recruitment, orientation, staff development, and performance reviews for 21 staff and 105 student assistants. Reports to the Chief Information Officer and Director of Libraries and assists with planning and administrative projects for the libraries. Represents the libraries in consortia and serves as an active participant in the college community. The Associate Director is 1 of 3 managers in Libraries and Information Services (LIS). As a member of the LIS leadership team, this person must be a team player, who is comfortable working with both library and information technology professionals, to create a 21st century innovative organization.

Required Qualifications: He/she must have an ALA-accredited MLS; second master’s in another discipline is preferred; and have a minimum of five years progressively responsible experience developing and managing user-focused services in an academic or research library, including extensive experience with information literacy and emerging technologies. Candidates must have experience as a collaborative team builder and strong leadership and supervisory skills. Other key skills include the ability to form a strong rapport with faculty and students; mentoring; budgeting; planning; and excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written); and a record of participation in library and/or technology-related national professional associations. Preferred Qualifications: a degree in philosophy, psychology, religion, or sociology (other degrees will be considered) for liaison work.

Salary: Salary range is available by request from Dr. Theresa S. Byrd, CIO and Director of Libraries, (740) 368-3246. Librarians earn 22 days vacation annually plus University holidays and the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. The University offers an excellent benefits package.
